In a significant crackdown on counterfeit money circulation, the Guwahati Police seized fake currency notes worth ₹10 lakh from beneath the Ulubari flyover and arrested one person in connection with the case.
According to police sources, the counterfeit notes were in ₹500 denominations and neatly bundled, indicating they were ready for distribution. The accused, identified as Asib Alam, was detained at the spot during the operation.
Fake Notes Allegedly Meant for Market Circulation
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fake currency was being transported for delivery to an unidentified individual. Officials suspect the notes were intended to be circulated in the local market, potentially causing financial losses to businesses and residents.
The seized counterfeit notes have been sent for forensic examination to determine their origin and printing quality. Authorities are also probing whether the seized consignment is linked to a larger inter-state counterfeit currency network.
Investigation Underway
Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to identify other individuals involved in the racket. Efforts are being made to trace the supply chain and uncover the source of the counterfeit notes.
The arrest marks another step in the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the circulation of fake currency in Assam’s commercial hub.
More details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
