BLW Launches India’s First Removable Solar Panel Project in Varanasi

BLW meets 20% of its energy needs through solar power

Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has unveiled India’s first Removable Solar Panel system in a pilot project at its premises in Varanasi, marking a significant step in Indian Railways’ push for sustainable and green energy solutions.

The 70-metre-long installation features 28 solar panels capable of generating up to 15 kW of electricity. Designed for efficiency and flexibility, these panels can be easily removed for maintenance or seasonal adjustments. Importantly, they are placed in between railway tracks, eliminating the need for land acquisition.

Highlighting the initiative, BLW General Manager Naresh Pal Singh stated that about 20% of BLW’s energy requirements are already met through solar power, underlining the unit’s commitment to energy-efficient practices.

With a projected lifespan of 25 years, the removable solar panels are expected to not only reduce energy costs but also pave the way for scalable adoption across the railway network.
