The election for the post of Vice President will take place today, marking the first time the process is being held at the New Parliament Building. NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan is pitted against the INDIA bloc’s candidate, former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College comprising 781 MPs from both Lok Sabha (542) and Rajya Sabha (239). The election follows the system of proportional representation through a single transferable vote, with all votes having equal value.
Voting will be conducted by secret ballot, allowing MPs to vote according to their preference, without being bound by a party whip. The majority mark is 391. Polling will take place between 10 AM and 5 PM, with counting beginning after 6 PM.
This election is being closely watched as it not only decides the next Vice President of India but also reflects the current political strength of both NDA and INDIA bloc in Parliament.
