In a significant move to safeguard students’ futures and ensure uninterrupted education, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the takeover of 215 schools linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its affiliate, the Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT).
The takeover follows the Ministry of Home Affairs’ declaration of JeI as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The decision, officials said, was necessary as the validity of the managing committees of these institutions had expired, and intelligence reports flagged their functioning as a security concern.
Schools Across Districts to Come Under Govt Supervision
The identified schools are spread across multiple districts, including Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, and others. Authorities confirmed that preparations for the takeover were completed and the process will be implemented immediately.
District Magistrates and Deputy Commissioners will oversee the transition in coordination with the School Education Department, ensuring that the academic continuity of students is not disrupted.
Focus on Quality and NEP Alignment
To maintain standards, the government plans to bring these institutions in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) framework. Officials have assured parents and students that efforts are being made to provide quality education on par with government-run schools.
Impact on Students and Staff
The decision will directly affect nearly 60,000 students and about 4,000 staff members currently associated with these schools. The government emphasized that its primary objective is to protect the interests of the students and provide a secure and regulated learning environment.
Background of FAT Schools
The move comes after years of scrutiny of FAT schools, which intensified in 2022, when concerns were raised about their alleged links to the banned JeI. Over time, several of these institutions had already been absorbed into the government’s education system, but the latest directive ensures full state control of the remaining schools.
