PM Modi’s ‘Nari Shakti’ Mission: Transforming Women’s Lives Through Empowerment and Self-Reliance

Under PM Modi, the ‘Nari Shakti’ mission has become a cornerstone of women-led development in India, with schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Lakhpati Didi empowering women socially, economically, and politically.

Guided by the mantra of Seva and Sushasan—Public Service and Good Governance—the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been driving transformation across sectors with women at the forefront. Through the ‘Nari Shakti’ mission, the focus has shifted from women’s development to women-led development, empowering women to lead with dignity, safety, and self-reliance.

Over the last 11 years, the government has adopted a lifecycle-based framework for women’s empowerment, ensuring support in social, economic, political, and legal domains. From constitutional safeguards to landmark laws against violence and discrimination, and from grassroots initiatives to national programs, the mission has reshaped opportunities for women in India.

One of the most impactful schemes is Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, which has helped improve the Sex Ratio at Birth from 918 in 2014–15 to 930 in 2023–24. Similarly, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), launched in 2015, has given millions of young girls a financial foundation for education and future security.

In December last year, PM Modi launched the Bima Sakhi scheme in Haryana, further boosting financial empowerment for women. Alongside, the Lakhpati Didi initiative is enabling women in Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to earn a sustainable annual income of at least ₹1 lakh, creating thousands of success stories across rural India.

For instance, Shabnam Quadir, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir, shared how joining an SHG transformed her life, enabling her to achieve financial independence.

Today, Indian women are not only active in governance but also taking leadership roles in defence forces, aviation, business, and grassroots administration, driving inclusive and sustainable national growth.

The ‘Nari Shakti’ mission stands as a symbol of India’s vision for a future where women are equal partners and leaders in the nation’s progress.
