Three-day nationwide initiative from August 29–31 to mark National Sports Day and honour hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya will spearhead the Fit India Pan-India Sports Movement from August 29 to 31 across the country. The initiative, launched to commemorate National Sports Day, also pays tribute to hockey icon Major Dhyan Chand.
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the three-day programme will be held under the theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main” (One Hour on the Sports Field). The movement aims to encourage mass participation in sports and fitness activities, fostering a culture of health and physical well-being nationwide.
The Ministry further stated that eminent athletes, sportspersons, and public representatives will join the celebrations, participating in a range of events and sports activities across states and districts. From local grounds to major sporting venues, the movement is expected to see citizens from all walks of life actively engage in physical exercise and games.
National Sports Day, celebrated annually on August 29, marks the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players in history. The Fit India Movement, launched in 2019, is one of the government’s flagship campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles, and this year’s observance seeks to deepen its reach at the grassroots level.
By combining the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand with a nationwide call for fitness, the Ministry hopes the programme will serve as a reminder of the importance of sports in both personal health and national pride.
