New Zealand have officially advanced to the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 following the outcome of the Super 8 encounter between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Pakistan needed a dominant 65-run victory to stay in contention for a semi-final berth. However, Sri Lanka successfully crossed the crucial 147-run mark during their chase, mathematically eliminating Pakistan from the race and confirming New Zealand’s progression to the knockout stage.
The result ensured the Black Caps joined England and South Africa in the tournament’s final four.
Pakistan Post Massive Total Powered by Farhan’s Record Ton
After being asked to bat first, Pakistan produced one of the strongest batting performances of the tournament. The innings was highlighted by the highest partnership recorded in the competition’s history.
Returning to the top of the order, Fakhar Zaman delivered an explosive knock of 84 runs off just 42 balls. However, the standout performance came from Sahibzada Farhan, who smashed a brilliant century.
Farhan scored 100 off 60 deliveries, registering his second century of the ongoing tournament — becoming the first batter ever to score two hundreds in a Men’s T20 World Cup edition.
The milestone also helped him surpass former India captain Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored in a single tournament edition.
Sri Lanka’s Brave Chase Falls Just Short
Chasing a challenging target, Sri Lanka showed resilience with the bat despite the mounting pressure. A crucial partnership between Pavan Rathnayake and captain Dasun Shanaka helped the team cross the 147-run qualification threshold in the 16th over.
Shanaka led from the front with a sensational unbeaten 76, striking three sixes and a four in a dramatic final-over push that nearly turned the game in Sri Lanka’s favour.
Despite the late surge, Sri Lanka fell short by five runs, handing Pakistan victory but ending their hopes of advancing further in the tournament.
