OpenAI Sets Up New Delhi Office to Deepen Engagement in India

AI powerhouse OpenAI is set to open its first office in India this year, cementing its commitment to one of its most important and fastest-growing markets. The company, known for its groundbreaking AI chatbot ChatGPT, announced it has formally established a legal entity in India and has already begun hiring a local team to be based in New Delhi.

This move underscores India’s critical role in OpenAI’s global strategy. A company statement highlighted the country’s status as a top-five market for developers on its platform. India also boasts the largest population of students using OpenAI’s tools. The new office will help the company engage more directly with the local ecosystem, including developers, businesses, and government bodies.

The expansion follows several recent initiatives by OpenAI aimed at the Indian market, including the launch of a more affordable subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, priced at Rs 399 per month. The company also faces competition from other major AI players like Google’s Gemini and local startups, making a physical presence and dedicated team essential for its continued growth and market penetration.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has previously praised India’s potential to become a global AI leader, citing its “amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.” The new office is a significant step toward making advanced AI more accessible and building AI “for India, and with India.”
